WOMEN AT WORK
Sarah Ainslie’s long-term project celebrates the contribution of female labour in exuberant photographs that capture the passion and struggle of the working life, forming a panoramic survey of social change over four decades.
These pictures are a vital testament to the indomitable spirit of women who shape the fabric of our lives, sustaining and binding together communities with their warmth, labour and fellowship.
Although their work often goes unrecognised, all are vital contributors to the East End cultural landscape and it is the spirit of these women – sharing their lives with dignity, integrity and strength – that has inspired Sarah over the years.
Sarah Ainslie is a photographer who has been based in the East End since the 1980s, documenting its shifting populations, urban landscapes, protests and fights for justice. She also undertakes collaborations, photographs performance, works with theatre companies and facilitates community photography projects.
An accompanying monograph, WOMEN AT WORK, East End Portraits 1992-2025 is published by Spitalfields Life Books at £20
