RESONANCE(S)

RESONANCE(S)

MA Documentary Photography Graduate Show University of South Wales

In an era marked by acceleration, fragmentation, and disorientation, Resonance(s) gathers photographic artists who respond to the condition of alienation with an insistence to reconnect with the world around them. Drawing inspiration from sociologist Hartmut Rosa’s theory of resonance, this exhibition frames photography not merely as a tool of documentation, but as a mode of relation: a way of being through which we attune ourselves anew to environments, histories, and our inner lives.

The works included in this exhibition emanate from points of rupture: personal estrangement, political disenchantment, cultural dislocation, promised futures that never materialized. From these thresholds, they seek not escape but reengagement. Whether through traditional documentary approaches, staged narratives or experimental processes, these images extend a call. Some rediscover overlooked textures of the everyday; others capture the echoes of memory, place, and time; still others cultivate a language for belonging and renewal. What links them is not subject matter, but sensibility: a stance of openness, of responsiveness, of concern, and of the willingness to embrace the contradictions that define us.

Resonance(s) does not mean to offer a singular message or resolution. Instead, it showcases an array of visual dialogues - between artist and subject, self and other, humans and their surroundings. In doing so, it asks: how might photography, in its stillness and silence, become a site of resonance in an ever-noisier world?
